Buildings that complied with the planning rules when they were first established but don't comply with the current rules may have existing use rights.

Existing use rights can be useful when replacing a building that was damaged or destroyed in the Canterbury earthquakes. Provided that certain legal requirements are met, existing use rights enable the reconstruction of a similar building without the need for a resource consent.
