Akaroa Harbour is still the primary destination for cruise ships visiting Canterbury during the 2015/16 season, due to earthquake damage in Lyttelton Harbour.
Depending on the size of the vessel, each cruise ship could have up to 2000 passengers on board. Occasionally, more than one cruise ship will visit Akaroa Harbour at the same time, resulting in a higher number of visitors in the town.
The cruise ship season this year runs from 4 October 2015 to 24 April 2016.
For more information about what cruise ships will be visiting Akaroa and when, go to the Cruise New Zealand website (external link) .
Note: Information on the schedule is subject to change depending on things such as weather conditions.
The map highlights the parking restrictions that will be in place in the township, between 5am and 6pm only on the days when a cruise ship is berthed.
The parking plan will ease congestion in the township and will accommodate the large visitor numbers and their associated tourism activity.
A Site Traffic Management Supervisor (STMS) will be located on the main Wharf from 6am until 6pm on the days that the cruise ships will be berthed in Akaroa Harbour. They will be able to assist with any issues with access to your home or business. They are not contactable via phone.
For further information, please contact Christchurch City Council.
