Services are held on 25 April throughout the city to commemorate ANZAC Day every year.
ANZAC Day services for 2017 have now concluded. Information for 2018 events will be posted on this page closer to the event date.
The Dawn Service will be held in Cranmer Square.
Organised by the Canterbury Branch of the Malayan Veterans Association in conjunction with the Christchurch Branch of the Royal New Zealand Returned and Services Association (RSA), and the Christchurch City Council.
There will be a volley of shots fired and the New Zealand Army Band will be in attendance, with a bugler playing The Last Post.
The service runs for about 30–45 minutes and will be projected on two large screens.
The parade is for Uniformed and Returned Services Personnel only and starts at the Armagh street RSA building. There will be no seating provided; if you are mobility impaired and need assistance, please speak to one of the ushers on site.
Families, individuals and groups are invited to lay wreaths at the Cenotaph in Cranmer Square at the conclusion of the Dawn Service. After the service the wreaths will be moved to the Christchurch Memorial RSA building on Armagh Street.
The event will take place whatever the weather.
Bus services run to a Saturday timetable on ANZAC Day which means that it is highly unlikely that you will be able to catch a bus in time for the Dawn Service. You will however be able to catch one in time for the 10am Citizens’ Service at Christchurch Transitional Cathedral. Visit Metroinfo (external link) to find out more about bus services.
Vehicle access to Cranmer Square will be restricted and there will be no specific public parking areas. Street parking is limited, so you are encouraged to carpool and / or come early.
There will be toilets on site at Cranmer Square.
The Citizens' Service will be held at Christchurch Transitional Cathedral, Latimer Square.
An address will be given by Air Commodore Andrew Woods, RNZAF and representatives of the NZ Defence Force, Consular Corps and various Christchurch youth groups will be attending.
A piper will play Flowers of the Forest.
The Citizens' Service is organised by Christchurch City Council in conjunction with Christchurch Cathedral and the RSA.
There are many other suburban services in various locations on Tuesday 25 April 2017.
