Many Christchurch parks and reserves have areas that are bookable for a picnic or event. By making a booking you ensure your first priority use of the area.

Most of our bookable park sites are well set up to hold gatherings of up to 50 people. A few of our parks such as Halswell Quarry, Ouruhia Reserve and Styx Mill have picnic areas with capacity for much larger groups.

Find out about some of our popular bookable spaces and the number of people they can accommodate to help you decide which site may best suit your event. Even if your preferred park is not listed it may be bookable - contact us to confirm availability.

Standard booking

If you are organising a simple picnic or gathering contact us to check availability and to make a booking. You will be required to pay at the time of booking. This ensures that the area is not being used by another group booking, that the area is clean and tidy, and contractors will not be carrying out maintenance work. Please note that you cannot book a picnic space in the Botanic Gardens. You can check Be There or Botanic Gardens Events to find out what else is on.

Bookings requiring further approval

If the size of your group is larger than the capacity of the picnic site or you want to include bouncy castles or gazebos at your picnic, you may need further approval.

Contact us to arrange your booking approval. Please be aware that it will take time to confirm and booking is unlikely to be completed immediately.

Event permits

If you want to make a booking for a large gathering of more than 150 people that is publicly advertised and includes the following:

  • infrastructure pegged in the grounds,
  • disturbance of traffic either pedestrian or car,
  • a PA system or band,
  • alcohol, or
  • food vendors.

It is likely to be considered an event which means you will need to apply for an event permit.
