Travis Wetland is the last large freshwater wetland in Christchurch - an important habitat for native wetland plants and birds.
The main car park and access point for Travis Wetland is at the end of Beach Road. There is also a car park on Mairehau Road. There is an information kiosk and the nearby education centre provides a laboratory, educational facility and meeting space for groups.
Travis Wetland offers easy walkways and viewing areas with opportunities to see many bird species and plant communities. These tracks are wheelchair and pushchair accessible in dry weather conditions.
Education programmes are available for schools through Learning Through Action to promote ecological values.
For organised groups or picnic bookings contact the Customer Call Centre on (03) 941 8999.
To protect birdlife, Travis Wetland is a dog-free zone.
Beach Road gates open from 8am to 8pm.
This guide explains how 15 numbered stopping sites fit into the restoration efforts. It lists what to look out for with identification clues for some birds, plants or insects you might see.
Available from all Christchurch City Council Service Centres for $10 and Travis Wetland Trust; PO Box 2750 for $10 plus $2 postage.
