Find out how your rates bill has changed in 2017/18.

In 2017/18 the Council will collect $455.6 million in rates (excluding GST).

  • $447.4m from existing ratepayers
  • $2.0m from new subdivisions and construction
  • $3.2m in excess water charges
  • $3.0m in late penalty payments

This year rates rose on average 5.46 per cent for existing ratepayers. This means the average homeowner is paying $48 per week (including GST).
However, the actual increase in rates for individual properties varies depending on factors such as:

  • a property’s rating value
  • whether it is classed as residential, business, or remote rural.

We also collect rates on behalf of Environment Canterbury(external link), which sets its own rates(external link). They are not included in the above figures, but will appear on your rates invoice.
