Construction of the Lyttelton Harbour wastewater project is being carried out across four phases. Learn more about the different work involved.
Phase one
A fibreglass pipeline is being installed by McConnell Dowell above the Lyttelton tunnel to transport wastewater from Lyttelton. This work is being carried out in conjunction with NZTA’s fire protection upgrade work on the tunnel.
Phase two
In November 2017 Council appointed McConnell Dowell as the contractor on stage two of the Lyttelton Harbour Wastewater project.
Work started in March 2018 and involve the installation of submarine pipelines buried approximately one metre under the seabed to transport untreated wastewater from the Governors Bay and Diamond Harbour wastewater treatment plants to Naval Point in Lyttelton. New underground pipes will be installed to connect the Lyttelton wastewater treatment plant to the Simeon Quay pump station and the pump station to the Lyttelton tunnel wastewater pipe.
A temporary contractor’s area along the foreshore near Naval Point will be used during construction but you will still be able to access the fishermen’s wharf and boat ramp during this time.
Phase three
Construction of pump stations at Governors Bay, Diamond Harbour and Lyttelton wastewater treatment plants as well as a new pump station at Simeon Quay in Lyttelton. Existing wastewater treatment plants will be disestablished with the tanks converted for storage. Work on phase three started in April 2018.
Phase four
Installation of pipes connecting the Lyttelton tunnel wastewater pipe from Heathcote to the Woolston pump station, including crossings under the railway line and Heathcote River. Construction of this final phase is due to start in the second half of 2018.
