Freedom Camping Bylaw 2015

Amendments to the Council's Freedom Camping Bylaw came into effect 1 December 2016.

The amended Bylaw:

  • Bans all non-self-contained freedom camping (e.g. freedom camping in cars or tents) throughout the Christchurch district
  • Allows certified self-contained freedom camping without a time restriction in the district’s rural zones.

From 1 December 2016, the following previously designated non-self-contained freedom camping sites closed to all camping:

  • Lower Styx River car park
  • Windsort Park car park
  • Addington Reserve car park
  • Part of the French Farm foreshore
  • Part of the Wainui foreshore.

In addition, the Council closed two small areas of the Wainui and French Farm foreshores previously restricted to self-contained camping only.

Further details can be found in the Freedom Camping Bylaw 2015 and under Camping.
