Puari ki Kahukura: From Heathcote through Ferrymead, Opawa and Woolston before heading into the Central City.

The Heathcote Expressway will be both a commuter and recreational route with connections to Ōpāwaho River Route and therefore the Rapanui – Shag Rock Cycleway and Christchurch Coastal Pathway.

The full route has now been approved by the Infrastructure, Transport and Environment Committee for detailed design and construction. The section between Truscotts Road and Charles Street was approved in March while a further round of consultation was held on the section along Ferry Road and Wilsons Road before it was approved in September.

Changes as a result of consultation

A number of changes were made along the route to respond to issues raised during consultation. The changes include:

  • revising the design on Ferry Road to add in additional car parking
  • changing a section of the cycleway on Cumnor Terrace from a separated path to a neighbourhood greenway in order to retain some mature trees
  • additional car parking bays on Sheldon Street
  • improved landscaping at various points along the route.

The initial consultation on the full Heathcote Expressway route closed late last year. Thank you to everyone who submitted.

As a result of consultation undertaken in November/December 2016, further investigations were carried out on the Ferry Road section of the proposed Heathcote Expressway Major Cycle Route. Three options were developed and presented to the Infrastructure Transport and Environment Committee.
