Puari ki Wairewa: The Little River Link connects new developments in the south-west into the Central City as well as the business areas at Middleton and Addington.
The route was officially opened on Thursday 18 May with Christchurch Mayor Lianne Dalziel, Transport Minister Hon Simon Bridges and Manuka Cottage Community Development Manager Cherylan Davies speaking at a well attended community celebration.
The new cycleway runs from Moorhouse Avenue through Church Square to Barrington Street. There are cycle crossings over Wrights and Lincoln Roads where they intersect the Southern Motorway, as well as improving the cycleway through Marylands Reserve.
The route will eventually connect to the Little River Rail Trail taking riders from Hagley Park through Addington, Wigram, Prebbleton, Lincoln and Motukarara on the way out to Little River. The next section is part of the NZTA’s Stage 2 Southern Motorway development.
An event to mark the start of construction on the second stage of the NZ Transport Agency's Southern Motorway development (external link) was held at the beginning of October. The project, along with the cycleway, is expected to be completed in 2019.
