Mobile food carts

Mobile food carts are covered by a number of different regulations, bylaws and policies. Find out what licences or permits may be required and useful information to get you started setting up your new business.

From April 2018 you can no longer operate your food truck from the same privately owned site for more than 10 hours a week unless you have been granted a resource consent.

Ministry for Primary Industries has developed the Where Do I Fit?(external link) tool to help you work out where your food activity or business fits within the Food Act 2014 rules. 

Notice of Registration (MFP)

Mobile food carts need to be registered as Movable Food Premises with the Council.

Permit to trade in public places

If a mobile food cart is to trade in public places, a permit for a mobile or travelling shop is also required.
