Christchurch city parks are a great learning destination and offer a wide-range of activities to log in your Passport to Learning including discovery trails, days out with rangers, scavenger hunts and planting days.


Children's University

Welcome to the exciting world of Children's University!

This international organisation offers educational experiences and activities for children aged 7 to 14 years old.

These activities take place at Learning Destinations - local educational organisations specialising in out of classroom education. Each child involved is issued a Passport to Learning to record each activity and how many hours learning took place. Children are rewarded with formal certificates and graduations.

Family planting days

You can get a sticker from the event organisers on the day. These events are worth between two to three hours.

West Broken Run family planting days

Where: 247 Wigram Road - parking limited, please park on side streets and walk to the site.
Dates: Saturday 16 June, 10am to 12pm and Saturday 20 July, 10am to 12pm

Plant trees, grasses and spread mulch to help improve the quality of the Ōpawaho Heathcote River that runs through the reserve. BBQ sausages afterwards to reward everyone's efforts.

Matariki dawn and family plantings

Celebrate Matariki with a dawn karakia and planting ceremony at the rongoā garden at 303 Radcliffe Road, followed by a family planting.

KidsFest events

You can get a sticker from the ranger or organisor on the day. These events are worth between one and two hours.

All KidsFest events cost $5 per child, free for parents/guardians/caregivers. Tickets can be purchased from Tuesday 4 June.

Every autumn, winter and spring school holidays, there is a self-guided discovery trail at the Botanic Gardens. Collect your free booklet or map from the Visitor Centre.
